Learning2Go
An overview of how the project has grown
How did it all start?
The Learning2Go project has its roots in BECTA/DfES sponsored project with Headteachers and Deputies which in 2002 began to investigate the potential of PDA’s for Management purposes. When given 30 devices as part of the project David Whyley and Gavin Hawkins decided to equip 14 10 and 11 year old learners with their own IPAQ’s. This was reported by David Perry for BECTA/DFES 2003. This initial work focused on the robustness of the technology, its use in expanding learning beyond the school day and its use in Literacy lessons. Infra-red beaming technology in classroom situations was used as a means of communication between PDA's and the teacher's laptop. As the learners had total access to the devices both in and beyond the school day, changes to their learning patterns began to emerge. Learners were treating the PDA’s with the ease that they demonstrate with gaming devices, worries over input devices were unfounded and learners quickly devised innovative uses of the technology beyond the scope of the project. Parents reported the beginnings of changes to learning patterns in terms of home learning, increased motivation and learners involving the whole family.
Phase 1
Began in 2004 and involved 2 primary and 1 secondary school and used 100 Toshiba E800 wirelessly connected PDA’s with VGA screen’s. The early project involved Espresso as key partners developing Multimedia learning content. Results of the project were impressive and the evaluation report can be downloaded from this website (Please visit the download area for all files). This lead to a more widespread rollout in Phase 2.
Phase 2
Began in October 2005 with over 1000 devices being rolled out to 18 Learning establishments. Visit the download area to download a copy of the 2006 Education Show flyer outlining Phase 2
