Learning2Go

Gives learners the choice to learn when they want,
where they want and how they want…

What are e-books?
The real killer application on the device so far has been the provision of e books. That is full electronic versions of books which enable personalised annotations, interactivity with a digital dictionary and the embedding of text notes and questions. These e books have been particularly successful in motivating boys to read, and encouraging a desire to want to author their own, As one learner commented - “When I write my own e-book and then convert it , it looks juts like a real book!”

There are a variety of formats for e-books. In the Learning2Go project we have followed the lead set by Keith Edwards and Paula Edmundson from Birmingham LA and have used the Microsoft Reader format, which comes with a .lit file extension. These are full text based editions of real books and they can support illustrations and learner annotations and also link to any preloaded dictionaries, which can at the press of a stylus, provide the reader with definitions of words.

In order to get started you will need to download Microsoft reader for your PDA and also for your Laptop from the Microsoft reader site. http://www.microsoft.com/reader
You can then surf the Microsoft reader site and others for free downloadable e-books.
Most of the “Classics” are available free. For example it is possible to download the complete works of William Shakespeare.

To Create your own e-books, you will need to install an add-in for MS Word.  To download the add-in go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads . This then allows you to convert any word document into e– book format. It then assumes the full functionality of an e-book.

It is also possible to convert “Testbase” items into e book format for SAT’s preparation, providing you have the Testbase rights at your school.

For further information please see our Download section.

Major Publishing companies produce most books for “Grown Up’s “ in e book format and these can be purchased off websites on the Net.

However some major publishing companies, such as Oxford University Press are producing a number of their educational titles, such as those from their “Treetops” series for use on Handhleds.

There is nothing to stop users exploring the possibilities of producing non fiction e-books too… Watch this space…..
