Connecting to the Whiteboard

“It enables me to monitor learning and allows the learners to show what they have achieved.”
Connecting to the teacher laptop and IWB
The ability to demonstrate activities on the PDA to the whole class and for learners to display their work at any time during a lesson was seen as a key functionality for the project.

The key piece of software that was trialled was Dotpocket - www.dotpocket.com

Dotpocket enables the teacher to connect their PDA via the synchronisation cable to their laptop and thereby the IWB and projector.

This is super for the introductory part of the lesson and enables real time demonstrations of work on the PDA and both Still and video screen capture. Dotpocket is available on a 30 Day Trial.

A further development of Dot pocket comes when teachers call learners to the front of the classroom to connect to the sync cable and demonstrate what they have done, either as part of the introductory part of the lesson of more probably as feedback during the plenary.

Connecting wirelessly?
Obviously the desire to connect to learner devices wirelessly and enable designated learners to connect directly to the IWB and make contributions to joint activities or to demonstrate their own work was seen as a logical development of the pedagogy surrounding the Dot Pocket experience.

Chinook became LinqMobile
Early in 2005 in partnership with SMART Learning2Go investigated some prototype software called Chinook. This enabled a small number of devices to connect wirelessly and to control the Smart board form the PDA and to receive information on the PDA in the same way. This was developed into the commercially available LinqMobile.

Synchronise for Mobiles
In current development is a version of this classroom management software. It will enable teachers to see a thumbnail of all PDA’s , and allow an individual PDA to be projected full screen to allow learners to demonstrate their work, with full touch sensitive control. Watch this space!
